So, without further ado, we’re going to talk you through all the software options available when creating an interactive touchscreen experience.
Questions to ask yourself before you begin
The first thing you should think about is “What are my business objectives?” What do you need to achieve from a business perspective from the event or space that the touchscreen is going in to? Is it about capturing leads, educating customers or just creating a memorable experience etc.?
With these objectives in mind you can think about the features you’ll want to include in your touchscreen, and the type of content and interactivity your customers will want to see and engage with.
Some of the questions you really need to ask yourself are:
What do you want to include in your experience (e.g., videos, images, pdfs, 3d models etc.)
The type of interaction you want your customers to have (you can be as creative as you like – the possibilities are virtually endless!)

The 4 main software options for interactive touchscreens
To give you an overview, there are four different routes you could potentially go down when choosing software for your interactive touchscreen display.
These are:
Building a completely bespoke touchscreen experience using HTML
Using specialist software which is designed for building touchscreens – such as Intuiface
Use a web-based digital signage solution – they are usually pre-built templates
Create an experience using Powerpoint or Prezi
We’re going to take a closer look at each of these options in detail below:
1. HTML
HTML is the language used to build websites. Touchscreens can often have a bit of a website look about them, and it is an extremely flexible programming language, meaning you can create almost anything that you can possibly think of.
The main problem is that you’d need to be a very accomplished HTML programmer to create a touchscreen experience.
There are also a number of differences between a website and a touchscreen. For starters, it’s a very different user experience for the customer. You’re generally dealing with a much bigger screen which impacts on the layout, and the person will be using their finger rather than a mouse to move around and interact.
We know it sounds like a small difference, but all things considered, it actually has quite far-reaching consequences.
Although people are very used to smartphones – which are actually just small touchscreens when you think about it – when it comes to using larger screens, people have different experiences. Clear prompts and navigation are essential to make it obvious to the user what they need to do.
Unless you’re very confident in your HTML abilities, we’d advise leaving this route to a professional developer with experience of creating touchscreens and UX (user experience journeys for customers).
2. Bespoke software
If HTML isn’t your thing, there are specialist software applications for creating touchscreen experiences.

You simply drag and drop the information you need into the template of the portal and connect your digital signage over the internet to the portal which then displays your content on your digital screens.
This type of system is very popular for digital signage as the content can be updated quickly from any location remotely. You are limited by the functionality of the system though, so it will only do certain things within the template but some do have a lot of options to cover most use cases.
As it is templated, you won’t have a lot of control over the branding and layout of the experience, but bear in mind this may not be an issue when the end goal is to create a very simple user experience.
4. Powerpoint or Prezi
Believe it or not, both PowerPoint and Prezi have very sophisticated interactive features which allow you to create touchscreen experiences. You can put a lot of things into them such as video, websites, images, pdfs, simple games and 3D elements.
With a good PowerPoint developer, you’d be hard-pressed to spot the difference between a PowerPoint experience or a custom-built one with HTML or Intuiface.
Saying that there are some limitations. For example, you can’t capture peoples’ details (if acquiring new leads was your goal), and some more advanced interactions would be impossible.
However, it is easy to update – especially PowerPoint, as most people can use it. Also, the time it would take to build an experience could be much quicker, saving both time and money.
Again, we would recommend using a presentation design agency or touchscreen specialist, as it would still be quite an advanced presentation you’d be creating, and you may not have the in-house skills yourself.

However, if you’re using an agency, then as long as they can deliver the right experience for you and your customers, the software they use shouldn’t really matter. So, our advice is not to get too hung-up on software and focus on delivering the right experience for your customers.

It has a vast number of presentations for you to browse through for inspiration, too. Plus, it has a built-in commenting system in case viewers want to share their opinion of a presentation.
25. SlideDog
SlideDog is great for live sharing and audience engagement through mobile devices and laptops. It also allows users to combine PowerPoints, Prezis, video clips, and web pages for a seamless attendee experience.
26. Preseria
